Circus WOW is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit Incorporated Association (INC9890133) based in the Illawarra. We’ve proudly been the only women’s circus in NSW since we were founded in 2000. By women, for women, we provide a welcoming and inclusive space where women of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can explore their potential through aerial and ground-based circus classes.

Our fun and creative community fosters self-esteem, friendship, and skill development in a safe, non-competitive environment. With a focus on play, creativity, and personal growth, Circus WOW also offers ongoing opportunities for community and professional performances, empowering women to shine on stage and beyond.

A Brief History

Circus WOW was founded in 2001, inspired by Penny Lowther’s vision of creating a women’s community circus that challenged women to take risks, explore their creativity, and have fun. Starting with just ten women, the group quickly grew, attracting participants aged 18 to 60 with little to no experience but a shared desire to push boundaries. WOW was an instant success, with media attention and invitations to perform at community events within weeks.

Under Penny’s direction and supported by a passionate team, WOW fostered a collaborative environment where women designed costumes, shared skills, and encouraged one another. Performances showcased dynamic and creative tricks that were funny, entertaining, and inspiring. Members took on new challenges, from costume-making and set design to choreography and backstage roles.

From the beginning, WOW aimed to provide a safe, non-competitive space for women of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to learn circus skills, build fitness, and find creative expression. The group also challenged stereotypes, raising the profile of women performers – particularly older and diverse groups. Families and friends who watched WOW performers saw women defy expectations, inspiring many to join the circus themselves.

Circus WOW has played a pivotal role in the Illawarra’s vibrant circus community. Many participants have gone on to become professional performers, trainers, and designers, and WOW was instrumental in founding Wollongong’s children’s circus, Half High. Through its legacy, WOW continues to empower and inspire women to achieve the extraordinary.
